The reference year indicates the starting year of the academic year (e.g. 2024 = academic year 2024/25).
Branches and other locations of educational institutions are not treated as separate educational institutions.

Private childcare institutions are included in early childhood education institutions starting from 2026.

A general education school is basic school or upper secondary school ( except for secondary schools for adults).
According to the Basic Schools and Upper Secondary Schools Act which entered into force on 1 September 2010, primary schools were replaced by basic schools where studies are pursued at stage I or at stages I and II.
Starting 2012 the number of former primary schools is added to the number of basic schools.

A vocational education institution is defined as an institution providing vocational education. This category also includes professional higher education institutions offering vocational education programmes.

A higher education institution is defined as an institution providing higher education. This category also includes vocational education institutions where higher education curricula were completed in 1995–2016. A more detailed breakdown by type of institution is available in table HT27: HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS BY TYPE OF INSTITUTION.
