The reference year indicates the starting year of the academic year (e.g. 2024 = academic year 2024/25).

The enrolment rate is calculated as the ratio of the number of students to the population.
Participation in general education, vocational education and training, and higher education is included regardless of study load. In higher education, only students matriculated in Estonian higher education institutions are included. Micro-credentials, studies in foreign educational institutions, and non-formal education are not included.

Student data are sourced from EHIS starting from 2005 and are recorded as of 10 November each year. In earlier years, data were collected via questionnaires. Age is calculated for both students and the population as of 1 September.
From 2015 onwards, the population is determined as of 1 January of the respective academic year (with age calculated as of 1 September).
In earlier years, the population was calculated as a weighted average of two consecutive years (e.g. for the 2010 reference period, data from 01.01.2010 and 01.01.2011 was used).

Data for 2007-2024 have been revised on 13.06.2025.
