The reference year indicates the starting year of the academic year (e.g. 2024 = academic year 2024/25).

A general education school is basic school or upper secondary school ( except for secondary schools for adults).
Schools for children with special needs include schools for children with both behavioural and special educational needs.

According to the Basic Schools and Upper Secondary Schools Act which entered into force on 1 September 2010, primary schools were replaced by basic schools where studies are pursued at stage I or at stages I and II. Starting 2012 the number of former primary schools is added to the number of basic schools.

The table presents data according to the administrative division in force on 1 January of the reference year.

Time series data on general education schools up to 1940 can be found in table HT14: GENERAL EDUCATION SCHOOLS BY TYPE OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION.
