The reference year indicates the starting year of the academic year (e.g. 2024 = academic year 2024/25).

The table data are published in two stages: in April, enrolment rate by sex and age; in May, a breakdown by county of residence is added.

Private childcare institutions are included in early childhood education statistics starting from 2026.

There is a break between 2008 and 2009 due to a change in the reference date used for age calculation.
Student data are sourced from EHIS starting from 2009 and are recorded as of 10 November each year. Age is calculated as of 1 September. In earlier years, data were collected via questionnaires and were recorded as of 31 December.

From 2015 onwards, the population is determined as of 1 January of the respective academic year, with age calculated as of 1 September.
In the years 2010–2014, the population was calculated as a weighted average of two consecutive years (e.g. for 2010, data from 01.01.2010 and 01.01.2011 was used).
Before 2010, the reference dates of student and population data coincide (31 December).
