DEFINITIONS

Household a group of people who live in the common main dwelling (at the same address) and share joint financial and/or food resources and whose members consider themselves to be one household. Household can also consist of one member only.

METHODOLOGY

The subsistence minimum is the minimum amount of living resources, which covers the general daily needs of person.

The subsistence minimum consists of two different calculated parts:

-        minimum estimated food basket (excl. expenditure on alcoholic beverages and tobacco products)

-        individual non-food expenditures (incl. expenditure on dwelling)

The minimum estimated food basket considers 41 food products and ensures the general daily need of nutrients, vitamins and minerals per capita without causing health problems. The diurnal energy value of the minimum estimated food basket is 2,400 kcal.

When calculating the cost of food basket, the respective amounts of food are annually multiplied with the purchase prices of the Household Budget Survey of Statistics Estonia. The average prices of the expenditure are used as purchase prices.

Composition of minimum estimated food basket (quantity of food per 30 days )
