DEFINITIONS

Deflator — the price index, used to convert current prices of any economic variable into prices of some other period.

 

Economic activity — the main activity of the enterprise by the Estonian Classification of Economic Activities.

 

Retail trade enterprises — enterprises which main activity is first and foremost selling of goods (excl. motor vehicles and motorcycles) for mainly using in households (according to the Estonian Classification of Economic Activities, activity G 52).

 

Current price the prices of goods and services in the reference period.

 

Retail sales of goods resell of new and second-hand goods by stores, stalls, sell counters, mail order sale stores, Internet and public sale to the people for their private consumption and housekeeping. Retail sale will not include sales of durable goods (cars, furniture, household appliances, etc.) to the people through leasing enterprises, if leasing enterprise becomes the owner of goods.

 

Volume index — shows the change in the volume of sales of goods in constant prices compared to the sale of some previous period. Price indices of goods are used while calculating the index. 

 

Constant price — current price deflated by price index of goods and services.

 

Net sales — the revenue from the sale of goods or services, which does not include VAT and excises. Net sales exclude subsidies. The comparison of data with those of previous periods is presented as net sales volume indices. The net sales volume index characterises the change in the sales in constant prices. The index is calculated on the basis of the price indices of the respective commodities.

 

Motor trade enterprises — enterprises the main activity of which is sale, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles; retail sale of motor fuel (by the Estonian Classification of Economic Activities G50).

 

Value index — shows the change in the sales of goods in current prices compared to the sales of previous periods. Value index is the ratio in percentages of the indicator of the current period and that of the reference period. Price index is not used while calculating the value index.

 

 

METHODOLOGY

Data in statistical database have been collected on the basis of the statistical survey  “Turnover from trade”.

Accounting period is month.

In the survey the data about turnover and retail sales are collected.

 

Survey population comprise enterprises, which main activity is retail trade or sale, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles, retail sale of automotive fuel (in accordance with Estonian Classification of Economic Activities G 50 and G 52) and are included in the register of economically active enterprises called statistical profile, created on the basis of the database of the Ministry of Justice Centre of Register.

Number of employed persons — all enterprises with 20 and more employed persons are under observation. The data of small enterprises (1–19 employed persons) are collected by sample survey, using the stratified simple random sample. The population was stratified by economic activity and by number of persons employed.

The estimates of the population total are calculated on the basis of the data collected by sample survey. When possible, the data of non-responded enterprises were replaced by those of an earlier period. The data of the remaining part of non-respondents were replaced with the respective average of responded similar enterprises.

The comparison of data with those of previous periods is presented as retail sales volume indices.

The monthly survey is adjusted on the summary data of the quarterly surveys “Economic activity G50” and “Economic activity G52”. 

The data may be revised during the year after the end of the reference month.
