Age is calculated as of October 1st.

Early leaver refers to a student who received general education in Estonia during the previous academic year but is not continuing their general education studies in the current academic year. Graduates of basic schools and gymnasiums, those who have left the country, and students who have passed away are not considered early leavers. Children of compulsory education age are classified as early leavers if they are marked as having left school to transfer to another general educational institution, but have not yet been enrolled in any other school in Estonia by November 10th of the school year.

The number of students is presented by administrative unit of residence, based on the administrative division in force on 1 January of the academic year.
Since 2022, places of residence determined on the basis of the partnership and location index methodology are used instead of places of residence recorded in the Population Register. This methodology relies on the links between persons and locations found in various registers (see also Implementation of the partnership and location index in demographic statistics). The change in methodology affects the comparability of the data with those of previous years and should therefore be taken into account when comparing time periods.

In 2025, Toila municipality was merged with Jõhvi municipality. Therefore, the data for Toila municipality are included in the data for Jõhvi municipality starting from 2025.

The table was commissioned by the Education and Youth Board. Youth monitoring activities are funded by the European Social Fund.
